(This post is part of my Refresh Your Craft & Soul Blog Event – see the beginning HERE!)
Once upon a time I used to paint pictures, in acrylic and watercolour, before scrapbooking took over my crafting life! Luckily I can still use the paints on my papercrafting projects. There’s something magical about mixing paint and water, ‘washing’ it over a piece of paper, and seeing it come to life…
A Wash of Watercolours Card:
There are all kinds of different arty inks and paints you could use to make a background like this, but I just used my trusty watercolours – this palette is small enough that it tucks into my bureau so it’s always on hand:
I used blue, green, and yellow to paint stripes across my white cardstock (American Crafts textured cardstock), making sure the paint was wet enough for the colours to mix into each other:
Because it was normal cardstock, not watercolour paper, it dried very warped:
But leaving it overnight pressed between some heavy books fixed that problem:
I stamped the sentiment (from the Jillibean Soup Cold Avocado collection) using black ink, and then also added a kite (Pink Paislee Prairie Hill) using clear ink and Aqua American Crafts embossing powder. Then I pulled out these Prima Resist Canvas Stickers (Hello Pastel), which had been sitting unloved in my stash:
I used the watercolours again to paint a few shapes:
Then I added them to my card with a few gems:
I’m going to save this for when I think someone needs a breath of fresh air mailed to them!
Be Inspired:
Use watercolours, inks, or mists to create a watercolour wash background
Paint some embellishments
Make a project with a light and airy feel to it
Do you ever make backgrounds with a wash of paint like this? Does it seem magical to you too?!

This looks beautiful Jennifer – the embossed kite against the watery background and I love those canvas stickers, must see if I can get hold of some of them. Yes I do think it’s magical when you use paints and so on to create backgrounds – you never know quite what is going to happen and I just keep my fingers crossed for a happy accident! :o)
