Christmas Elf Cute Felt Ornament – Including Template

Good morning! Today I have this Christmas Elf Cute Felt Ornament to share with you:

I’m loving this little elf! He’s made with the leftover felt from my Charming Felt Santa / Gnome Doorstop last year. I’ve had the scraps sitting in my stash since then and I wanted to think of a way to use them up!

Here’s how to make it…

Step 1: Print off your template and gather some scraps. Please note that your template will be slightly different to mine – I made some adjustments as I was sewing the elf, and I couldn’t go back to photograph the start again as I’d already used up my felt scraps! The changes I made were to have only 2 arms, and to cut them from grey felt instead of blue (the blue felt blended in too well with the body), I also got rid of the smaller scallop border as the larger one was fiddly enough as it was:

Step 2: Cut out the template pieces and draw around them on the felt with a pencil or haberdasher’s chalk, before cutting them all out:

Step 3: Using a small, neat running stitch, sew the hats and ears onto the heads, making sure they will line up when you put the two heads back-to-back. Embroider on some eyes and a mouth (using backstitch for the mouth and satin stitch for the eyes). If you don’t want to do a satin stitch you can use brads for the eyes like I did on the felt Santa last year. You can also add some embroidery / beads to the front of the hat if you want to:

Step 4: Sew the scalloped borders onto the bases of the bodies, then sew the hands and then the arms onto the front body piece. Sew the heads onto the bodies too (again making sure they will line up when the two pieces of elf are placed wrong-sides together):

Step 5: Start sewing the two halves together using a blanket stitch all around the outside, except for the bottom edge under the scallop borders. When you get to the hat make sure you use a chopstick or similar tool to push a bit of stuffing into the swirly bit before you close the hat up completely – you wont be able to push it into that part from the base of the elf, because of the angle:

Step 6: Once the rest of the elf has been closed around the edges, fill it with stuffing. You can try tucking some into the ears but that’s a bit fiddly and not really necessary as they look okay un-stuffed:

Step 7: Close the base of the elf with more blanket stitching, and then use a darning needle to thread some baker’s twine under a couple of blanket stitches at the top of the elf, so you can use it to hang your ornament:

Then your elf is all ready to gift to someone or hang on your tree this Christmas!

Be Inspired:

Use a colour palette of white, grey, blue, and peach or soft pink

Make or use an elf ornament or embellishment

Add tiny beads to the middle of a snowflake or star

I still have some grey, peach, and white scraps of felt left, any ideas what I can use those for?
