Yes, You Can! Altered Matchbox Gift

(This post is part of my Refresh Your Craft & Soul Blog Event – see the beginning HERE!)

I’m a pretty positive person most days, but I think we all need a little pick-me-up sometimes, a reminder that we can try new things and go for our dreams. So I’ve made this little gift to give to a friend to remind her that Yes, She Can!

To make a match box like this you need to…

Step 1: Buy a matchbox, mine is approx 2″ x 1.5″:

Step 2: Cut and score a piece of patterned paper to wrap around the outer sleeve of the matchbox (my paper is from the Glitz 77 6×6 pad):

I stuck mine onto the matchbox with a gluestick.

Step 3: Paint the edges of the inner compartment with gesso or acrylic paint:

Yes, You Can! Altered Matchbox by Jennifer Grace

Step 5: Once the inside is dry you can decorate it, I used a phrase cut from the same Glitz pad, and a 77 giant rhinestone, plus some orange seed beads which I stuck in with glossy accents:

Step 6: Add some alpha stickers to the front of your box and you’re done:

You could add more dimension to the outside of the box, but I wanted to keep mine flat so it can be tucked into a pocket or handbag!

If you love the idea of this but don’t fancy making your own then check out this Etsy shop: Kim’s Little Monsters as her’s are super cute!

Be Inspired:

Alter a box with a refreshing phrase to gift to someone

Pile some seed beads along the edge of a project

Make something small enough to fit in the palm of your hand

Do you need a little pick-me-up like this sometimes?

This challenge is where you can link up ANYTHING you make or do that’s inspired by this event, and to tempt you to enter there’s also a prize to win:

Challenge Prize at Jennifer Grace Creates

The We R Memory Keepers Sew Easy Circle Tool with the ‘Love’ and ‘Banners’ piercers!

While you are reading my posts, or posts along the blog hop, make sure you are pinning or bookmarking them – then get creating! When you’ve finished make sure you come come back here and add it to the linky tool at the bottom of this post. All entries will also be added to the Refresh Your Craft & Soul Pinterest Board.

Here’s a card to add to the inspiration (but remember your challenge entry doesn’t have to be anything to do with this card in particular)…

Enjoy Every Moment:

Here’s a bit about how I put the card together…

1. I started with a 6×6 card blank, my favourite size card to make, and cut my most used base – two squares of patterned paper at 5½” and 5¼” (normally I just eyeball this rather than measuring it). It’s refreshing to stick to what you know best:

These papers are from the My Mind’s Eye Just Splendid 6×6 Pad.

2. I cut a corner from some Pink Paislee Hello Sunshine Paper, and chose a couple of sentiments (a Glitz 77 Sticker and a Hello Sunshine Chipboard Sticker). Then I tipped out the Hello Sunshine Ephemera, to try a few out. First I tried a rainbow:

And then a bouquet of red/pink flowers:

But I decided they both were too bold – they dominated the sentiments, but I wanted the sentiments to be the main thing to stand out.

So I chose this yellow flower and orange heart:

3. Then I just had to ink the paper edges in gold, stick it all together, and add some extra details – like another Glitz 77 sticker, some MME Just Splendid Wood Dots, a few sequins, and some Waco Pearl Pen White Dots:

Now I can send it so someone who needs a refreshing card to cheer them up!

Be Inspired:

Mount two sheets of square patterned paper at the back of your project

Choose two sentiments instead of one

Use your favourite techniques to keep things simple

Glitter & Glitz Birthday Card

Hello. I’m back again with another Glitz Design Challenge entry – I wasn’t going to enter more this month, but then last week’s theme was glitter! Regular readers will know I couldn’t possibly resist such a theme!

I made a card this time to change it up a bit, and because I have totally run out of Birthday cards so I need to stock up…

Glitter & Glitz Birthday Card:

I used the new 77 collection again (like I did on my New Haircuts Layout), choosing some of the bolder coloured papers from the 6×6 pad for this card. I really liked the orange colour in the geometric pattern, so I found a similar glitter  (American Crafts ‘Carrot’ Fine Glitter).

I used a small old paintbrush to rub some PVA glue (you could also use Mod Podge) along the edges of a 77 giant rhinestone, and the ‘Happy Birthday’ sentiment which I’d stamped onto white card. Then I placed them both on an old cookie cooling rack, with a piece of paper below it, and threw on a ton of glitter:

Then I left them to dry over night before shaking off the excess glitter (you can’t see much glitter on the piece of paper above because I had to move it to photograph it).

These were nice and sparkly, but I also added dots of Crystal Stickles around the edge of the ‘Oh Baby It’s A Wild World’ card – you can just about see them in the photos but they give a nice subtle glisten in real life. I also stitched some twinkly gold embroidery thread down the centre of the geometric pattern on the left, and added a few shiny sequins:

What do you think, just enough glitter?

I hope you have a sparkly weekend!

Lovin’ Life (Another Layout for a Glitz Challenge!)

Hello! I’m back with another layout for the Glitz Design February Monthly Challenge. They’ve been asking us to join in with their weekly themes this month for a chance to win a Black & White prize pack – all the details can be found HERE. Hurry – there’s only a few days left to enter!

This weeks theme is ‘Die Cut Machines’. As I’ve been trying to use my Cricut Mini more often, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to get it out again! Here’s my page for this theme…

Lovin’ Life:

You may have noticed on this layout, and on my previous Glitz challenge entry this month (the Dora Delights Layout HERE), I’ve used cardstock for my background, which isn’t something I do very often. That’s because I’ve totally run out of 12×12 sheets of Glitz paper – I use them too quick! I am dying for the new collections to reach UK stores!

However, using a sheet of dark kraft cardstock for half the page meant I had a good place to die-cut a title, and layering a yellow ombre-effect sheet of paper from the Wild & Free 6×6 Pad behind it was a fresh contrast. The ‘Lovin Life’ phrase is from the ‘When I Was A Kid’ Cricut Digital Cartridge:

After I’d die-cut my title I browsed through for other images I liked. I love the sunshine (from ‘The First Few Years’ Cricut Digital Cartridge) which is cut from another sheet of Wild & Free paper; it was fun to put a giant rhinestone (also from Wild & Free) in the centre of it! I also adhered the sunshine to the page just in the middle of the sun, so the rays can lift off the cardstock. This helps to show off the gold mist drops I added to the cardstock as I didn’t like it being too plain:

Lovin Life Layout by Jennifer Grace

The red-stripe heart and the light-blue cloud (stuck on with 3D Foam Dots for more dimension), and the woodgrain flag beneath the journaling, are all cut with the Cricut Mini from various Glitz paper scraps.

Then I finished off the page with lots of Glitz stickers – mostly from Hello December which shows they don’t have to be used on Christmas projects! And of course there’s my usual scattering of gems plus some Waco Pearl Marker dots:

The journaling (on a journaling card from the Uncharted Waters collection) reads:

This tree swing made from a broken camping chair was perfect for you to lay back in! You were giggling so much as we pushed you back and forth. So much fun!

I love how happy and carefree my son looks in these photos! Hopefully the layout has captured that spirit.

Have you joined in the Glitz challenge? How about any other challenges lately? Whatever you are up to I hope it’s happy and carefree!

Dora Delights (A Layout for a Glitz Design Challenge)

Hello everyone! Today I have a layout to share, which I’ve created to enter the Glitz Design challenge this week (to use Pink + Gold/Silver + Neutrals).

I always love how Glitz have a weekly theme for the projects they share, so it’s fun to join in with it too! The link list for the month is right HERE, where you can add your projects! Here’s mine…

Dora Delights:

Dora Delights layout by Jennifer Grace

This super-pink photo seemed the perfect one to use for this challenge. My daughter was going through a phase where she adored Dora The Explorer, so she got lots of Dora presents for her 3rd birthday, and loved them all!

I used bits from a variety of Glitz collections, including papers from Uncharted Waters, Color Me Happy, and Wild & Free, roller doodles from Raven, washi tape from Hello Friend, and Embellishments from Finnley!

I jazzed-up the edges of my white cardstock using the ‘Triangles’ and ‘Owls’ roller doodles, by stamping them with pink ink and heat embossing with American Crafts Zing ‘Metallic Gold’ and ‘Grapefruit’ powders. I also used gold glitter on an chipboard arrow to make it nice and sparkly:

The owls aren’t particularly significant for the photo, but I like how wide-eyed and innocent they look, to match how young she was:

I tried to drawn on the ‘On This Day’ sticker with a white gel pen, but it wouldn’t dry, so I wiped it off with a baby wipe and used stickers instead:

I had fun adding other embellies like the sparkly bow from Freckled Fawn and the Wood Veneer from Studio Calico too!

What do you think, will you take up the Glitz Design Challenge? Have fun if you do!

See you again soon, Jennifer x

Silly Games – A Cheerful Page

(This post is part of my Frosty Festivities 2013 Blog Event)

The Glitz Designs Hello December collection is certainly inspiring me to make happy pages!

Silly Games:

Silly Games layout by Jennifer Grace

I can tell what the expression on my son’s face is, even though you can only see the back of his head! He was smiling the whole time we played ‘pin the carrot on the snowman’! Me and Little Miss made this game for our ‘Merry Un-Christmas’ last year and it was silly but fun!

I filled the top of the page with embellies, because I counted the ‘Love’ paper at the bottom as white space (I know it’s got text all over it but I decided it was subtle enough to count!). A couple of the bits are from the Finnley collection, including the ‘La La Love You’ accent sticker, which I liked because it made me think of the ‘fa la la la la’ Christmas song!

Silly Games layout by Jennifer Grace

I love the little car with the Christmas tree on top, from the Hello December sticker sheet. It doesn’t really have anything to do with the page, but I liked the boyish touch. I also cut a wreath sticker in half so I could put it on two areas of the page:

This page will always make me smile to remember the silly games we play!

Be Inspired:

Cut an embellishment in half and put it in two different areas of your project

Point some triangles at a quote or journal card

Scrapbook a photo where someone is not looking at the camera

Merry Table – A Colourful Layout

(This post is part of my Frosty Festivities 2013 Blog Event)

This hour I have a happy, colourful layout to show you…

Merry Table:

Merry Table Layout by Jennifer Grace

The photo may not look that exciting to most people, but this was the first time I’d attempted to make my dining table to look pretty for our Christmas meal, so to me it’s special. Plus I remember the joy I felt when I found the aqua glittery reindeer that I used as table centrepieces – they are so pretty!

I used the Glitz Designs Hello December collection on this page, because I love the bold patterns and colours – they make me feel happy like the table decorations did! To add extra colour I stamped the Roller Doodle Deer in several colours. I just used cats eye ink pads to ink each deer up individually before rolling the stamp on my page:

Merry Table Layout by Jennifer Grace

I love how it looks like lots of little deer are marching across my page:

I choose lime green letter stickers to finish the title, because though green is a traditional Christmas colour, this lime hue jazzes it up to make it more bold and modern:

What do you think of the bright and bold colour mix? Does it still seem Christmassy enough to you?

Be Inspired:

Use bright bold colours on your next project (maybe include some lime green)

Ink a stamp with several different colours

Scrapbook a photo about your winter or Christmas decorations/decor

I’ll ber back in an hour with another sponsored giveaway! Jennifer x
