Build A Snowman Layout – Working with Dark Photos

(This post is part of my Frosty Festivities 2015 Blog Event – see a list of all the posts HERE)

I have another layout to share with you today. I have had these dark photos sitting in a drawer for over 5 years, but couldn’t work out how to use them because they were so black…

I think I pulled it off okay in the end! I took some photos of my process, so you can see how I figured out a way to use the photos.

First I pulled a bunch of stuff from my Christmas stash. I looked for things with a hint of black to start with – I didn’t want things that were all black because the whole page would be too dark, but I wanted a hint so the photos didn’t look too lost or contrast too much with the rest of the page. Once I’d found a few things with a bit of black I noticed my scarf was blue in the photo, so I looked for items of that hue. Then as I was rummaging I came across the My Mind’s Eye Christmas On Market Street gold ephemera and gold glitter sticker pieces, and decided that would make the page feel more special. Kraft and wood went quite well to match the gold too.

Here’s my pile of supplies:

I pulled out the ‘Ready, Set, Snow’ stamp set at the last minute, because I realised none of the supplies had any snowmen on them!

The first thing I did was to cut down the photos to lose some of the black and make it easier to fit them all on one page.

Next I chose which piece to use for my background. I tried it on a plain mint blue piece, but that was too boring. Then I tried it on a Pinkfresh Studio paper with mountains and houses on, but I figured I’d be covering most of the paper up so it seemed a shame to waste it, and the paper was too white – it made the snowman appear yellow! The final piece, again from Christmas On Market Street, was just right – the base colour was off-white and the black trees helped to echo the colours in the photos without being too overwhelming:

I really wanted to use this old Crate Paper journal card on the layout, as the words fitted so well. But it would take up most of the page:

Then I noticed the words that were important to me – ‘Build A Snowman’ and ‘Bundle Up’ – were at the top, so I could just use those at the top of the page:

It was all pretty easy from there. I planned out where the larger elements of the page were going to go:

Build a Snowman Layout - Working With Dark Photos at Jennifer Grace Creates

At this point I knew I wouldn’t bother trying to squeeze on a title – the journal card and the word ‘joy’ were enough for me!

I got them all stuck down, flat on the background:

Build a Snowman Layout - Working With Dark Photos at Jennifer Grace Creates

Then I just needed to finish it off with my usual scattering of pretty bits and pieces, including buttons, little wood hearts, and enamel dots:

Build a Snowman Layout - Working With Dark Photos at Jennifer Grace Creates

I added one of the Happy Scatter ‘Watercolour Words’ flair badges above the big photo:

Build a Snowman Layout - Working With Dark Photos at Jennifer Grace Creates

And I managed to add a stamped snowman next to my journaling:

The journaling says:

‘I am blessed with a sister as childlike as me! Of course we had to bundle up and build a snowman. The biggest I’ve ever built. We were so excited!! 09/01/2010’

Be Inspired:

Cluster everything in the middle of your page or project

Use a word sticker or alpha stickers so they overlap a photo or image

Use a black, mint, teal, and gold colour scheme

Do you have any photos sitting around in a drawer that you’re scared to use because of the colours in them?

Remember that commenting on this post, and any post that goes live during November 2015, will count as another entry into the Grand Giveaway {NOW CLOSED}, but only if you’ve registered your interest in winning that prize right HERE!

I’ll see you again tomorrow!

Fly Me Away – A Carefree And Floral Layout Process Video

Today I’m sharing a carefree and floral layout process video for this page:

'Fly Me Away' Carefree and Floral Layout Process Video at Jennifer Grace Creates

It was inspired by the Jot Magazine Mood Board Challenge for September 2015:

Jot Magazine September 2015 Mood Board Challenge

Isn’t it gorgeous? I couldn’t resist the beautiful blues and reds! Well done to Mardi Winen who created it!

Here’s my layout process video if you’d like to see how it all came together (you can also watch it on YouTube HERE):

And here’s a few detail shots in case you want to take a longer look at them…

This shows the journaling which tucks away into a little pocket:

I managed to fit lots of florals and scattered bits and pieces onto my page:

I love the angle of this photo. It was taken by my Step-Dad as we were out for a walk with him and my Mum. No children in tow!

Layout Process Video using the Minc Foiling Machine

I’ve got another video using Heidi Swapp’s Minc Machine to share with you today (my Unboxing & First use video can be seen HERE).

This scrapbook layout uses lots of Minc products (papers, tags, labels, and foils) to make a super shiny page!

‘So Cute’ Layout using the Heidi Swapp Minc Machine:

Here’s the process video sharing how I put the page together (or you can see it on YouTube HERE). I also quickly flick through the Minc papers and tags that I own so you can see them too:

And here’s a couple of detail shots of the finished page:

Don’t you miss those days when you used to hang out on the sofa, talking about how cranes are yellow and fire engines are red?

I hope the video gives you some page process ideas (like using mist to create a page border) even if you don’t own a Minc Machine!

Have a shiny day!

Guest Post – Terhi Koskinen with a Happy Scatter layout & Process Video

As I promised when I revealed the Guest Designers on Tuesday, I’m back today with the first Guest Designer’s project with items from my Happy Scatter Etsy Shop. Read on to see what she created and to see a process video!

Here’s the fabulous ‘Love This’ scrapbook layout by Terhi Koskinen:

GUEST POST - Terhi Koskinen with a 'Love This' Happy Scatter layout

Here’s what Terhi wanted to say about her page:

I decided to focus on the ‘Going In Circles’ stencil, but once I got my inspiration going I noticed I used all the things I got in my Guest Designer goody pack. The ‘Scattered Triangles‘ stencil is so very versatile, I’m sure it will be the one I’m using over and over again in the future. The same goes for the wood shapes and especially for the cork stickers, those are so thin and nice way to add interest to a scrapbook page!
.
I’m so glad I got a chance to guest here, the Happy Scatter products made me so Happy! Thank you Jennifer!
 .
The lovely Terhi also filmed a process video to show you how she put the page together, I especially loved watching how she used the stencils. You can watch below or see it on YouTube HERE.
 .

Ooh she makes me want to pull out my stencils and messy media and get playing! Here’s some close ups of her page. I like how she cut one of the Everyday Printed Cork Stickers in half to tuck them into her layers, and the stars from the Simply Life Wood Veneers set look gorgeous coloured with turquoise mist:

GUEST POST - Terhi Koskinen with a 'Love This' Happy Scatter layout

The cork sticker below is also from the same set, but Terhi altered it by drawing a border and adding a ‘best ever’ circle, to cover up the ‘365’ number printed on the star – showing how you can make them work for you on your project:

Loose threads, pretty paper layers, and flecks of mist all compliment the stenciling:

What do you think? Does Terhi’s page make you want to pull out your arty supplies?!

Here’s a reminder of where to find all Terhi’s other fantastic projects…

Terhi Koskinen:

You can find my creations from my My Blog, tutorials from my Youtube Channel, and lots of “behind the scenes” pics from my Instagram. I’m also on Pinterest, Facebook, and Twitter!

Thank you so much Terhi, you did a wonderful job and I can’t wait to see what the other Guest Designers create over the next couple of months!

Have a great day,

Celebrate Today Layout – Using New Stash Like A Kit

I mentioned in my last post that I’d received a new box of goodies (items I bought in the Hey Little Magpie sale). I was itching to use them, so I decided to treat my new stash like a scrapbooking kit when creating my next layout. Here’s the page I ended up with…

Celebrate Today:

Celebrate Today layout at Jennifer Grace Creates

Here’s the supplies I started with. It included a selection of 12×12 papers, a MME Record It 8×10 Word Art pack and some Now & Then enamel shapes, a Webster’s Pages 6×6 Hello World paper pad, a Blazer Designs Stripes stencil, some Jillibean Soup Wood Nickels and Birthday stamps, and some Pink Paislee Sentiment Series stamps:

Celebrate Today layout at Jennifer Grace Creates

I chose the Fancy Pants As You Wish ‘Celebrate’ 12×12 paper because I could use the words on the paper for my title, and because I had a portrait orientation photo that fitted in quite nicely. I then pulled out a few Hello World 6×6 papers that went with my photo – the Hello World collection is themed as a newborn baby & early childhood collection but most of it is just sweet, and can be used for a variety of projects:

Celebrate Today layout at Jennifer Grace Creates

I snipped a few items from the cut-apart sheets, and used my Martha Stewart Pinking Circle Punch to punch a few pieces from the other sheet of paper – one side of the paper says ‘happy little moments’ and the other side is patterned with blue stars:

Celebrate Today layout at Jennifer Grace Creates

I used the ‘Stripes’ template to add some grey paint at the top right and bottom left of my page. Because I just held it down with washi, rather than spraying on temporary adhesive like I normally do, it ended up messier than I like. But I decided I could live with it!

Celebrate Today layout at Jennifer Grace Creates

I wanted to stamp one of the Pink Paislee hexagon stamps onto the background. I don’t have any good white ink pads, so I knew I’d have to heat emboss it. I used Versamark ink and white embossing powder. But my first attempt went horribly wrong:

Celebrate Today layout at Jennifer Grace Creates

You couldn’t properly read any of it! So I gave that one up as a failure, and instead I stamped and heat-embossed a couple of times in the space where my photo would be going later:

Celebrate Today layout at Jennifer Grace Creates

Then I used a craft knife to cut the best one of these out, to use as an embellishment on top of the failed stamped area:

Celebrate Today layout at Jennifer Grace Creates

Next I splattered some Mister Huey Opaque White and Heidi Swapp Gold Mists across the bottom left and top right of the page:

Celebrate Today layout at Jennifer Grace Creates

I left it to dry for a couple of days, but the white mist still wasn’t properly dry, as I discovered when I wiped my hand across it. I decided to wipe in a few directions, so the white dots looked like shining stars instead:

Celebrate Today layout at Jennifer Grace Creates

I had smudged a bit of paint when I used the stencil:

Celebrate Today layout at Jennifer Grace Creates

So I moved one of the punched paper circles to cover this up:

I adhered my photo and papers in place, added some journaling on another cut-apart card, did a bit of sewing with a sewing machine, and added some of the wood nickels, the enamel shapes, and some gems from my stash:

A lot of people would have left it at this point, but I decided the top left and bottom right corners were too empty for me. So I used my Cricut Explore to cut a couple of ‘Swirl Layered Photo Corners’ (#M43A3D) out of more of the 6×6 papers. I added a couple more gems around them too:

Then my page was finished! Here’s a few close-ups of the completed layout…

It’s quite fun and I’m very glad to have busted into the new stash straight away, no hoarding for me!

Have you ever used a box of new goodies like a kit before? What do you think of the smudged white mist dots – do they look like stars or just a mess?!

Have a great Monday!

Hello! It’s time for the November sketch challenge over at the Scrap 365 blog!

Here’s the fabulous new sketch:

This month there’s a prize of goodies from Mixed Media Place up for grabs, so make sure you play along!

Here’s my page for inspiration…

Golden Glow:

Golden Glow layout by Jennifer Grace for Scrap365

I was in a very autumnal moon when I was creating this, can you tell?!

For this page I delved into all kinds of items in my stash (including some Happy Scatter bits and pieces). If you want to check out how I put the page together, and why I chose certain items, you can watch my Page Process video, either below or by clicking through to the You Tube link HERE.

One of my favourite things I used was the journal card… some of you may recognise it from THIS POST from June where I talked about updating pocket cards:

The squirrel sticker gave it the perfect feel for the page!

I used nice bright alphas for the word ‘glow’ so it seems to shine from the background:

Spritzing the Let’s Gather sunset 3×4 card to a happy yellow helped to bring out that hue in the leaves in the photo:

Making this page made me want to go wandering through some golden woods again. Fingers crossed for some sunshine on the walk I have planned for today!

In Cape Town Layout Process Video

Hello,

I mentioned that I did record a process video for my ‘In Capetown’ layout (that I originally shared HERE) – well I’ve finally finished editing it! Actually it’s recording the voice over that takes the longest, as I can only do that when the house is quiet – not very often with 2 kiddies in the house!

Anyway, here’s the video if you’d like to see me put the page together:

Remember to give it a ‘thumbs up’ if you enjoy watching! Thanks for checking it out!

Scrap 365 September Sketch – Ride Time Layout & Process Video

Hello all. Sorry I haven’t been by much, our internet is still not fixed (nb: don’t use Talk Talk if you can help it), we’re switching to another company so it will be fixed, but not for another 3 weeks! This is driving me crazy!

In the meantime, today’s the reveal for the Scrap 365 September Sketch Challenge:

September 2014 Sketch at Scrap 365

This month the prize has been donated by American Crafts, so make sure you enter to try and win a bundle of goodies!

Here’s my layout for some inspiration…

Ride Time:

Ride Time by Jennifer Grace - September Sketch for Scrap365

Fun and colourful, right?! I pulled lots of American Crafts items from my stash to use (from collections including Plus One, Cut & Paste, and Mayberry) since they were sponsoring the challenge and all. But I used other items too, including the background paper which is from the Simple Stories Good Day Sunshine collection. It took me a while to choose that as my background paper though… I explain my choice for this and other details on this Page Process video:

Here’s a better look at the close up details…

Ride Time by Jennifer Grace - September Sketch for Scrap365

I loved how I could lift the edges of the letters on the ‘OXOX’ tag from the Plus One collection up to slide them over the photo and patterned paper.

In the above photo you can see a bit how much the gold embossing powder shines in the light and makes the whole page extra special!

What do you think? If you like my YouTube video please give it a ‘Thumbs Up’ and Subscribe to My Channel.

Don’t forget to check out the Scrap 365 Blog for more inspiration from the DT – some today and some tomorrow!

I’ll see you again, hopefully not too long in the future…

Scrap 365 July Sketch – Hey Look layout & process video

It’s time for the Scrap 365 July Sketch Challenge! Here’s the sketch (based on artwork by Ali Parris):

Scrap 365 July 2014 Sketch Challenge

This month the fabulous 7 Dots Studio is sponsoring the sketch, one lucky participant will win these goodies:

7 DOTS - Scrap 365 July 2014 Sketch Prize

They’ll be so happy!

7 Dots Studio were also kind enough to send goodies for the sketch team too, I was able to play with the Illumination collection… here’s my page…

Hey Look:

Hey Look by Jennifer Grace for Scrap 365 July 2014 Sketch using 7 Dots Studio Illumination

This captures a moment of my daughter and her friend discovering things together!

Here’s a page process video showing you how I put it together:

(If you like the video please give it a ‘thumbs up’ and subscribe to My You Tube Channel to encourage me to make more videos!)

Here’s some close up shots and a bit about my page choices, in case you aren’t able to watch the video…

I used the ‘Simple Life’ sticker on top of the ‘Laugh’ sticker, because I added the circular one first and then decided I didn’t like how it ‘broke’ the edge of the photo. It was too distracting. Because the ‘Simple Life’ sticker has a straight edge and a paler colour it stopped the photo from looking broken:

Hey Look by Jennifer Grace for July Sketch Detail 1

The ‘Find Happiness In The Little Things’ was a large tag  which I really wanted to use, but I couldn’t work out how to fit it on my page. So I simply cut it to be a square phrase instead:

Hey Look by Jennifer Grace for July Sketch Detail 2

I added a little splash of colour to the top left of the page with some roller stamping and washi tape:

Hey Look by Jennifer Grace for July Sketch Detail 3

What do you think, are you up for a sketch challenge? Don’t forget to check out the Scrap 365 Blog to see the other examples from the DT (and to enter your layout!).

Bye for now, Jennifer x

Scrap 365 May Layout Process Video (And Another Page!)

When I posted my Hot Forest Layout for the Scrap 365 May Sketch Challenge I mentioned that I had a process video to share. It’s taken me a while to get it finished as there has been lots going on here with my trip to London, and then visits from my Sister-In-Law and then my Mum!

Now there’s only 4 Days left to enter the May challenge, so be quick to make something, you might win a massive pile of Prima goodies!

Here is my Page Process for my Hot Forest layout…

Watch this video in You Tube: Page Process – May Sketch Layout for Scrap 365

What do you think of the process video? Would you like to see more videos like this? I’ve invested in a new microphone  recently (I used it for this video) so I’m hoping I’ll get better at them now!

I’ve also managed to make another layout with the same sketch. Here’s the sketch as a reminder in case you didn’t watch the video…

Hello River:

Hello River by Jennifer Grace

This shows me and my friends walking along the river in Oxford at my Belated Hen Party last year. It was fun girly gossiping time!

This time I’ve used the Prima Something Blue Collection:

Prima Something Blue

Along with some more of the ‘Deers, Owls, & Mushrooms’ Scrap 365 Wood Shapes:

Deers, Owls, & Mushrooms Scrap 365 Wooden Shapes

I didn’t alter most of the wood shapes this time, as they stood out quite nicely against the background anyway:

Hello River by Jennifer Grace

Though I did alter the Prima Cartographer wood veneer compass below – the wood was a bit unevenly coloured, so I just rubbed a black ink pad on it to give it an even coating:

Hello River by Jennifer Grace

I used a couple of the Something Blue stamps, the ‘Remember’ one above and the ‘Dated’ one below, which I loved until I wrote the wrong date in it, then I had to think creatively to cover it with a sticker and the right date:

Hello River by Jennifer Grace

I hope this shows how the sketch can be used in different ways! Don’t miss out on your chance to win this prize package:

Prima May Prize

You must want to get your hands on that?! Go enter your page based on this sketch HERE by 11th May 2014 at 11.59pm GMT!

I hope you have a great day, Jennifer x
