NSD Sketch & Making A Sun From Paper Scraps

Good evening! I know that NSD (International Scrapbooking Day) isn’t until tomorrow, but the fun has kicked off already in the ‘For The Love Of Pretty Paper’ UK Facebook Group. We’re playing some challenges this weekend and I offered to set a sketch challenge – here’s the sketch I designed:

NSD 2015 Sketch by Jennifer Grace Creates

You could change the sketch up as it suits you – including changing the sun for a different large shape like a circle, heart or star. But I cut a sun from paper scraps for my page, which is called ‘4 Happy Faces’:

I’m going to share how I put the sun together, but first I dripped mist over my background to give it some added interest:

Then to make the sun I started by cutting a circle from a piece of yellow patterned paper – I used washi tape roll to draw around on the back of the paper to get the circle shape:

Then I cut some tall triangles from the same yellow patterned paper. I didn’t measure these at all, I just quickly cut them out:

I snipped the pointy ends off the triangles and placed them around the circle to make sure I had enough:

Then I flipped the circle over, added repositionable adhesive to the back, and stuck the triangles on:

I checked they were spaced correctly, then flipped it over and added more adhesive to the back of the triangles before sticking it to my layout:

It was really noticeable that the sun was just a circle stuck on top of the rays, so I added a sticker on top of the sun to bring it together and distract attention from the joins:

Then I finished off the layout with more stickers and lots of gems!

I called my page ‘4 Happy Faces’ because of those adorable smiles:

I almost painted the speech bubble wood veneer bright pink, but then I decided to just add a pink enamel dot on top – I like the contrast of rough wood and shiny enamel:

What do you think, will you have a go at the sketch?! If you’re in the UK come and join in the FB Group, but if you aren’t and you use the sketch please leave me a link in the comments below and I’ll come and check it out!

Goodbye Scrap365

Earlier this week I had some sad news – that Scrap365 would be no more.

The magazine itself had already closed, but with supplements set to continue in the Craft Stamper magazine, plus a digital issue and the blog were supposed carry on. But now the supplement, digital issue, and blog are all closing too.

Us members of the Scrap 365 Sketch Challenge Design Team had already created our layout for the new sketch that was due to go live today. Now instead of sharing it as a new sketch challenge we are instead sharing our pages as a final farewell piece of inspiration.

Here’s the sketch my page was based on:

December Scrap 365 Sketch

And my page…

Chilled:

Chilled by Jennifer Grace for December Sketch

I made a wintry beach layout, using a variety of bits and pieces from my stash, including stickers and ephemera, and a paint sample card from a DIY shop – because the paint was called ‘By The Seashore’:

My favourite bit of the layout is the boats I stamped onto the background using grey ink, they are quite subtle so they look like they are glimpsed through a winter mist:

If you want to check out the final pages from the rest of the sketch DT, and maybe say goodbye, then head to THIS POST on the Scrap 365 blog. But hurry, because I’m not sure how long the blog will be left open for viewing.

Thank you to Scrap 365 for giving me the opportunity to be on the team, and especially to Ali Parris, who is a wonderful enthusiastic and supportive soul, I wish her all the best for her future endeavours.

I will be back again tomorrow to reveal the challenge winners from FF2014.

Bye for now,

Scrap 365 November Sketch – Golden Glow Layout and Process Video

Hello! It’s time for the November sketch challenge over at the Scrap 365 blog!

Here’s the fabulous new sketch:

Scrap 365 November 2014 Sketch Challenge

This month there’s a prize of goodies from Mixed Media Place up for grabs, so make sure you play along!

Here’s my page for inspiration…

Golden Glow:

Golden Glow layout by Jennifer Grace for Scrap365

I was in a very autumnal moon when I was creating this, can you tell?!

For this page I delved into all kinds of items in my stash (including some Happy Scatter bits and pieces). If you want to check out how I put the page together, and why I chose certain items, you can watch my Page Process video, either below or by clicking through to the You Tube link HERE.

One of my favourite things I used was the journal card… some of you may recognise it from THIS POST from June where I talked about updating pocket cards:

The squirrel sticker gave it the perfect feel for the page!

I used nice bright alphas for the word ‘glow’ so it seems to shine from the background:

Spritzing the Let’s Gather sunset 3×4 card to a happy yellow helped to bring out that hue in the leaves in the photo:

Making this page made me want to go wandering through some golden woods again. Fingers crossed for some sunshine on the walk I have planned for today!

Scrap 365 September Sketch – Ride Time Layout & Process Video

Hello all. Sorry I haven’t been by much, our internet is still not fixed (nb: don’t use Talk Talk if you can help it), we’re switching to another company so it will be fixed, but not for another 3 weeks! This is driving me crazy!

In the meantime, today’s the reveal for the Scrap 365 September Sketch Challenge:

September 2014 Sketch at Scrap 365

This month the prize has been donated by American Crafts, so make sure you enter to try and win a bundle of goodies!

Here’s my layout for some inspiration…

Ride Time:

Ride Time by Jennifer Grace - September Sketch for Scrap365

Fun and colourful, right?! I pulled lots of American Crafts items from my stash to use (from collections including Plus One, Cut & Paste, and Mayberry) since they were sponsoring the challenge and all. But I used other items too, including the background paper which is from the Simple Stories Good Day Sunshine collection. It took me a while to choose that as my background paper though… I explain my choice for this and other details on this Page Process video:

Here’s a better look at the close up details…

Ride Time by Jennifer Grace - September Sketch for Scrap365

I loved how I could lift the edges of the letters on the ‘OXOX’ tag from the Plus One collection up to slide them over the photo and patterned paper.

In the above photo you can see a bit how much the gold embossing powder shines in the light and makes the whole page extra special!

What do you think? If you like my YouTube video please give it a ‘Thumbs Up’ and Subscribe to My Channel.

Don’t forget to check out the Scrap 365 Blog for more inspiration from the DT – some today and some tomorrow!

I’ll see you again, hopefully not too long in the future…

Scrap 365 August Sketch – Victorian Madam Layout

Hello everyone!

It’s time for the Scrap 365 August Sketch Challenge! Here’s the sketch:

Scrap 365 August Sketch Challenge 2014

This month the winner will receive some Glitz products from Stampbox, so make sure you join in!

Here’s my layout for some inspiration…

Victorian Madam:

Victorian Madam by Jennifer Grace for Scrap 365 August 2014 Sketch Challenge

The sketch team were challenged to use OLD STASH for this month’s page, so I pulled out a whole heap of unloved supplies. This pile is what I started with, a kind of ‘kit’ to match my photo – the items are mostly around 3 years old, some are older:

1

To start the page off I began by making a square-ish paper stack for my photo, and then tried it out on a few different shades of cardstock:

Trying out colours

I decided I liked the cream shade on the right the most.

I checked the sketch again and noted the strips of thinner paper at the top and the bottom of the sketch, so I made some too:

5

Then I started adding embellishments to my page. One way I find it easier to use up larger paper or chipboard pieces is to cut them in half – the yellow flower would have looked too gaudy as a whole flower, but just half of it peeking out from the paper stack looks really pretty:

6

When I had almost finished my page I added the journaling, but then the page looked too busy along the bottom edge:

7

Luckily I had used removable Herma tape-runner dots, so I was able to pull up the strips of paper and add a thinner strip instead, which makes the page look a bit cleaner:

I also had to move this phrase sticker over from where I’d originally planned to put it, because I hadn’t left space for my title! I like it even better here though, as it draws your attention down to my daughter’s eyes:

And here’s the whole page again so you don’t have to scroll back up:

What do you think, does this tempt you to go rummaging through some old stash to see if you can breathe new life into it? The only newer items I used on here were the alpha stickers for my title, the cardstock, and a couple of gems. I am very pleased to have used a few older papers and embellishments!

Don’t forget to check out the Scrap 365 Blog to see the samples from the rest of the Design Team and to maybe enter the challenge yourself!

Bye for now,

I love using sketches to give me a fresh look at how to design a page. Regular readers will know I’m on the Sketch Team for Scrap365 and I love making my page each month, and seeing how many different ways a sketch can be interpreted!

This sketch is based on a layout below, which I made about our move to a new house, which has a garden so we can finally grow some things. So if you need an extra prompt you could also make the layout about something new you’ve done recently, or use lots of flowers on your project!

Here’s the sketch:

Scrap 365 May Layout Process Video (And Another Page!)

When I posted my Hot Forest Layout for the Scrap 365 May Sketch Challenge I mentioned that I had a process video to share. It’s taken me a while to get it finished as there has been lots going on here with my trip to London, and then visits from my Sister-In-Law and then my Mum!

Now there’s only 4 Days left to enter the May challenge, so be quick to make something, you might win a massive pile of Prima goodies!

Here is my Page Process for my Hot Forest layout…

Watch this video in You Tube: Page Process – May Sketch Layout for Scrap 365

What do you think of the process video? Would you like to see more videos like this? I’ve invested in a new microphone  recently (I used it for this video) so I’m hoping I’ll get better at them now!

I’ve also managed to make another layout with the same sketch. Here’s the sketch as a reminder in case you didn’t watch the video…

Hello River:

Hello River by Jennifer Grace

This shows me and my friends walking along the river in Oxford at my Belated Hen Party last year. It was fun girly gossiping time!

This time I’ve used the Prima Something Blue Collection:

Prima Something Blue

Along with some more of the ‘Deers, Owls, & Mushrooms’ Scrap 365 Wood Shapes:

Deers, Owls, & Mushrooms Scrap 365 Wooden Shapes

I didn’t alter most of the wood shapes this time, as they stood out quite nicely against the background anyway:

Hello River by Jennifer Grace

Though I did alter the Prima Cartographer wood veneer compass below – the wood was a bit unevenly coloured, so I just rubbed a black ink pad on it to give it an even coating:

Hello River by Jennifer Grace

I used a couple of the Something Blue stamps, the ‘Remember’ one above and the ‘Dated’ one below, which I loved until I wrote the wrong date in it, then I had to think creatively to cover it with a sticker and the right date:

I hope this shows how the sketch can be used in different ways! Don’t miss out on your chance to win this prize package:

Prima May Prize

You must want to get your hands on that?! Go enter your page based on this sketch HERE by 11th May 2014 at 11.59pm GMT!

I hope you have a great day, Jennifer x
